2012: An Overview Of The Year Ahead

“News You Can Use”

Picture
As the clock strikes 12:00 midnight around the globe on January 1, 2012, billions of humans will celebrate what is considered to be the new beginning of the year according to the Gregorian calendar created by western men hundreds of years ago.
Picture
In other parts of the globe, such as China, the new Lunar year 4710 of the Elder, Water, Dragon won’t really commence until January 23rd so we are dealing here with much relativity in terms of how we decide to divide time into segments which seemingly begin and end with great regularity.

Astrologers view time differently.  We pay attention to the cycles within the great wheel of life known as the zodiac and these endless cycles within cycles do have points of ingress and conjunctions which we term ‘beginnings’.  These new starts have little to do with the calendars used by the vast majority of peoples around the globe, however.  Keep in mind that each sign represents a sphere of qualities and life experiences.  As planets pass through these signs their energies both influence and are colored by one sign after another beginning with the most individual (Aries) and ending with the most universal (Pisces) before starting the cycle all over again.  A planet entering a new sign marks a point of beginning, or ingress.

Planets also come together in what is called a conjunction and then move in a cyclical dance with each other culminating in an opposition before moving back together.  These rhythmical cycles occur over and over again as both planets move around the ‘great wheel’. J. Lee Lehman recently pointed out in her excellent article ‘Sustainability Issues in 2012 and Beyond’ in the Dec/Jan issue ofThe Mountain Astrologer that the decade from 2010 to 2019 has no major outer planet conjunctions, therefore those types of ‘beginnings’ have already occurred.

We had the Neptune/Pluto conjunction in Gemini way back in 1892 heralding a new cycle of civilization which takes 493 years to completely unfold.  Gemini themes of information, communication, and travel are still evolving as we speed along in this highly digitalized time with increasing momentum towards artificial intelligence as one of our scientific goals, and space travel and exploration as another. Gemini is not exactly known for its ability to focus on meaning or philosophically comprehend all the data that it loves to collect, or analyze with care all the modes of travel it loves to engage in. Variety and dualism are hallmarks of this sign. Bear in mind that we are just a little over 100 years into this nearly 500 year cycle!

The Uranus/Pluto conjunction of 1966 in Virgo heralded yet another new beginning whose broad themes of social justice and civil rights, the peace movement, and women’s liberation and the sexual revolution are now reaching a heightened crisis point, or ‘point of no return’ as Bill Herbst has characterized it with their first quarter square between them beginning and reaching exactness by June 24, 2012.  The new technologies that were born in the mid-60s using computers (Virgo) have enabled millions and millions of users to have instant access to each other through all those Gemini means of connection and communication like mobile phones, e-mails, and social networks.

Uranus entered Aries in March of 2011 coinciding with the movement called ‘The Arab Spring’.  Uranus in Aries symbolizes a new beginning in individuation and independence.  How will this urge for freedom of individual rights handle the Plutonian pull towards greater and greater control of the collective by the few?  This is one of the great crises of our times:  the ‘we are the 99%’ versus the ‘1%’ elite, ruling class. 2012 is the year when this crisis begins to really heat up with two exact squares between Uranus and Pluto; the first on June 24th, and the second on September 19th, though these square aspects continue through March of 2015.

Picture
Most astrologers that I have read predict 2012 to be both a year of further suppression of the masses, and denial by them as well as a year of major conflicts and squabbling with little resolution in sight. We might apply this to the 1% as well, according to Ms. Lehman.  Why?  Because these square aspects between the major planets predominate.

So where is the bright ray of hope, the fuel for optimism here?  I would say it has something to do with how each one of us chooses to work with the cosmic energies rather than passively accepting a type of collective fate.  There are several ways of doing this which I would like to outline next.

Let’s start with the ingress (entrance) of Neptune into Pisces, which officially began back in early April of 2011.  Take note that both Uranus in Aries and Neptune in Pisces entered new signs quite close to each other back then, and gave us a foretaste of what in 2012 will be solidly strong for both.  Neptune in Pisces correlates with themes of oneness, universality, and the next ‘collective dream’.  The positive use of this energy seems to be an inward journey of tuning in through some means of meditative, reflective communion with nature, the mysterious realm of the ‘divine’ in all of life, as well as the celestial and vast cosmos that we are all a part of.  Pisces is the final sign in the zodiac; therefore it symbolizes both universal understanding and completion of a great cycle.  Inner work is needed in this sign, as well as service to the whole.  The pitfalls of both Neptune and Pisces are too much fantasy and escapism in whatever form.  The devouring aspect of the collective can swallow up and disintegrate consciousness if these paths are taken to their extreme.  Anything that becomes addictive will assume this shadow land for the naïve or unwary soul.  That is why mass manipulation of consciousness is even more dangerous during this passage over the next 14 years.

Thankfully we have Uranus in Aries for another six years to antidote any further tendency to sleep-walking provided we use its active energy to awaken and become active, not passive in pursuit of our ‘Neptunian visions’.  Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, and therefore demands a lot of energy to move and get going.  Uranus with Aries is the primo cry for freedom and independence.  Combining the two, Neptune and Uranus, got easy for us when they were in each other’s signs, called mutual reception.  Now we must continue the coordination of yin and yang and STAY IN BALANCE.  We can’t afford to fall asleep, nor can we afford to go off half-cocked and crazy with impulse.  True vision needs to guide our actions.

Saturn in Libra has certainly been trying to teach us about balance and fairness, once again.  We’ve certainly not seen much of that in political arenas, nor in the upper echelons of hierarchical institutions, but nonetheless it has been a major theme for the past two years as certain glaring inequities were brought to light with the help of Pluto and Uranus.  In 2012 Saturn traverses the 3rd and final decanate of Libra and continues to trine Neptune awhile longer.  Neptune and Saturn balance each other out when in trine aspect, because neither tends to outweigh the other.  Manifesting vision could be a reality when these two are in harmony.  Saturn will enter Scorpio by October of 2012 and will continue its trine with Neptune a bit longer.  From Air to Water heralds another shift.

With Pluto in Earth/Capricorn, Neptune moving into Water/Pisces, Chiron already in Water/Pisces, and Saturn eventually moving into Water/Scorpio we will have much that is YIN to work with.  Rather than thinking ‘Contraction’ feel how we might utilize this energy to further resource from within.

Picture
I think of Synergy Dance founded by Charmaine Lee in Washington DC.  It’s a brilliant form of dance/body-movement which works with these principles of Yin and Yang, inner and outer, resourcing and radiating energies through a series of body movements correlating with earth, fire, water, air, and ether.  All are necessary for wholeness.  Her Yin exercises are often on the mat with the body curling up and breathing, and placing hands at key points on the sacrum and base of skull where energy points are resourced to produce what can then be released during outer yang movements.

Let’s not forget this principle in what seems to be a time of contraction and scarcity, for it can actually be a time of turning to both ancient and new forms of resourcefulness within our separate lives and within community.  The key, I feel, is smaller collectives and groups of people uniting together to help and protect each other.  Smaller, lighter crafts are needed now to navigate the collective waves.  If you’re hooked up too tightly with institutionalized, large collective bodies you are going to be further controlled and suppressed by them.  They are not going to serve you because they are linked with the closed systems of a ruling class designed to control larger and larger components of the population on this planet.

We have Mars in Virgo awhile longer to actually help this idea of ‘small is beautiful’.  Mars in Virgo is actually punctuating and catalyzing, again, the original theme/beginning of Uranus and Pluto in Virgo.  It was a revolution of the tiny, was it not, with the entrance of computers into our lives?  But it was also a revolution of minorities.  All those ‘minorities’ are asserting themselves more and more now.  We have civil rights of different races, we have gay rights, we have women’s rights, we have children’s rights, we have animal rights, etc.  Working classes are also represented by Virgo; in other words, those 99% who serve and support the 1%.  Sheesh!  Will the hard-working, humble ones yet ‘inherit the earth’?  Before it’s too late?  2012 does seem to be the tipping-point year.  Mars in Virgo can either help or hinder (via militarization) that which deserves to enjoy the fruits of their labors, including pretty much all of the natural world.  Doesn’t it have ‘rights’ as well???

Finally we come to Jupiter which has been expanding on these themes of the ‘haves and the have nots’ in the earthy/material sign of Taurus.  On one side there is the growing movement to protect our environment and the earth resources which sustain us; on the other hand there has been the opposite movement to exploit even more the resources that are non-sustainable and increasingly more difficult to obtain through mining and drilling of the earth.  Greed is rampant like never before as is awareness of the planet’s ever dwindling resources.  2012 finds Jupiter moving forwardthrough that entire sign and on into Gemini by early June to its 16th degree before turning Retrograde on October 4th, right around the same time that Saturn enters Scorpio and certain realities begin to sink in where the world financial and energy systems are concerned.  Again, the themes of survival will be enormous and if plugged into too much of the closed control systems, fear will be rampant.
I don’t profess to know what lies ahead in terms of events and collective realities.  There are so many probabilities and variables which even statistical analysis can no longer predict with great accuracy.  What I can see are themes and cycles of energies, and more Yin times are coming.  Yin is not as popular as Yang in the Western World.  Yin requires more right brain, more feeling, and more empathy.  Yin is more inner directed than outer.  Survival will depend more on intuitive knowing perhaps, and trusting one’s inner voice and sense of timing.  Those who have learned to utilize their right brains may possibly be better equipped to weather the coming crises which will undoubtedly heat up in 2012.  Those who have learned to rely on inner counsel and have a clear, strong inner compass will possibly sail through the turbulence by staying centered and calm from deep within.

Here’s a run-down of the planet’s movements for 2012:

Pluto in Capricorn 7-9 degrees

Retrograde April 10th to September 17/18th

Neptune from 28 degrees of Aquarius to 3 degrees of Pisces
Retrograde June 4th to November 10/11th (3 degrees Pisces to 0 degrees Pisces)

Uranus in Aries 0-8 degrees
Retrograde July 13th to December 13th (8 degrees Aries back to 4 degrees Aries

Saturn from 28 degrees of Libra to 9 degrees of Scorpio
Retrograde February 7th to June 25th (29 degrees of Libra back to 22 degrees)

Jupiter from 0 degrees of Taurus to 16 degrees of Gemini
Retrograde starts October 4th at 16 degrees of Gemini

Mars from 20 degrees of Virgo to 4 degrees of Aquarius
Retrograde from January 23rd to April 13th (23 degrees of Virgo back to 3 degrees)

WINTER SOLSTICE 2011

Winter Solstice 2011
Picture
For thousands of years the Solstice turning points of every year have been honored and celebrated on this planet.  We know this because concrete evidence still exists in ancient stone circles, mounds, and sacred sites such as Newgrange in Ireland that people honored the relationship between our earth, the sun, and the moon at key phases during the year.
Picture
Now in our modern world of the 21st Century we come to yet another turn of the wheel and many of us will be celebrating the return of the light that is the Winter Solstice.  I will be gathering with a group of women on a beautiful horse ranch here in the Sierras.  We will share food, music with drums, rattles, and bells, and do ritual together releasing the old and bringing in our intentions for the new, yet to unfold.  What will you be doing where you are?  Those of you south of the equator will be celebrating the peak strength of the sun and the longest day of the year as you prepare for its slow descent.  Let’s hope that all around the globe people of all persuasions are gathering together to make sacred and celebrate together this special time.

In the United States the Solstice occurs on December 22nd at 12:30 AM EST.  The Sun’s entry into Capricorn comes in the deep darkness of night with the Moon waning in Scorpio.  There certainly seems to be ‘a chill in the collective air’ regarding a lack of warmth and light, thus the trine from Sun to Jupiter holds rays of hope that abundance is a strong potential if we will only perceive it anew and shift our consciousness away from what we don’t have to what we do.

Picture
This is a fascinating chart in that you can visibly see an enormous bowl pattern bordered by an opposition from Saturn in the 1st house to Jupiter in the 7th. Every planet within this bowl links through both easy and challenging aspects to other planets.  Only Mars sits alone in the 12th without aspect save a strong square to the Nodes.  Perhaps it’s a good thing to shelve our aggressiveness for awhile and look more consciously at ways to make peace.  The bowl patternis symbolic of holding something which can be given to others, and this chart seems to indicate that deep within each of us as souls there is a profound longing to belong, to be held and nurtured by ancient themes that run solid in our blood, to deeper truths that speak of oneness with the earth and thus the cosmos.  If we can hold that place sacred within our core selves, then we can radiate that out into the world and nurture others.  It can be a chain reaction of giving.  Yes it can.

This is a Libra rising chart for Americans.  Somewhere else on the globe a different sign will be rising as the Sun enters Capricorn.  For this country, however, Venus in Aquarius sets the pace as ruler of the chart.  She represents women and women’s issues, and all social factors relating to unions of partnership as well as children.  She represents the arts with its entire plethora of artists, musicians, dancers, and entertainers and even sports where arenas for entertainment occur.  She also presides over peace negotiations and diplomatic resolutions.  Venus is very strong in this chart holding the apex of a T-square with Saturn and Jupiter, as well as sextiling the Moon and Uranus who are in trine with each other.  She’s a wowie!  She basically says we can pull together, we can organize; we can hold the tensions of opposition if we are willing to be tolerant and open-minded enough to realize that each individual is important within the embrace of the whole.  We are each different but equal. That’s Venus in Aquarius.  So American women are increasingly getting stronger in their voices and activism which is probably a good thing for this country, but this Venus embraces everyone and says let’s be creative, have fun, and stimulate each other for better things than beating up on each other.  Let’s take advantage of Mars in the collective closet.  Let’s make love, not war!!

This chart is a tightly woven net-work of grace and grit all held together by the two extremes, Saturn and Jupiter.  Good thing theSun sextiles Saturn and trines Jupiter.  Sun in Capricorn is willing to work for a goal, an aspiration.  Mercury in Sagittarius conjoining the North Node, rising ahead of the Sun, and finally direct after back-tracking retrograde this past month says “Stay focused on your goals, your aspirations, and don’t look back.  Keep going forward.”

The trines from Uranus in Aries to the Moon and Mercury indicate the rising tide of revolutionary spirit that Sun/Pluto squaring Uranus must harness for positive change rather than regressive control.  We each have an opportunity to imprint this energy to release the past, which keeps us chained to oppressive patterns, and harness the energy for positive growth into a future where we all contribute productively to the whole and benefit from that whole. Pluto gives power to regeneration if we use it for that ends.

Finally, this chart shows Neptune and Chiron still connected as a dream of potential healing linked with Jupiter, the Sun, and Saturn, yet squared by the Moon in Scorpio.  Can a dream of unity inspire us to keep going and work for a better world, or will our fears of defeat and oppression hold us back?  The choice is ours.

This Winter Solstice gives us an amazing pattern to work with.  Its basic statement is about integrating energies that can further transformation (Sun conjoining Pluto).  The message of Capricorn is always about holding light during the darkest of times.  So I’m encouraging all of you to gather together and bring in the light!

Get Ready For 235 Days Of Mars in Virgo—-Woo-Hoo! by Genevieve Vierling

12/11/2011

While a lot of attention is being focused on the ‘end of the Mayan Calendar’ and it’s unknown aftermath, as well as the 11.11.11 date, are we also ready for another Mars tour, and slow detour through a sign not exactly known for its Mars friendliness?  Let’s hope so, because here we go, ready or not!

On 11.11.11 Mars enters Virgo for 235 days.  Yes, that’s 7.8 months.  During that long spell, Mars will slow and retrograde on January 24 th, 2012 at 23 degrees of Virgo and move backwards for 82 days until it slowly turns direct on April 14th at 3 degrees.  It will finally leave Virgo by July 3, 2012, just in time for America’s Birthday celebration. Those are the hard facts.

Perhaps it’s now a good idea to take a look at your own birth chart and figure out just where that Mars energy is going to be, if not simply sit (!) for a spell, in the months to come.  Pay careful attention to that arena because you will definitely get catalyzed there with all sorts of Virgoan themes.

What are some key Virgo themes to be aware of?  Ram Dass said it best, “BE HERE NOW”.  Virgo isn’t exactly a sign that embraces fantasy and escape from reality.  Virgo prefers to tackle problems that need to be addressed right now.  That’s why Virgos make such great practitioners of all kinds.  They like to solve problems and even get their hands greasy like good mechanics do, or bloody, like good surgeons do.  Get in there and get the job done, and don’t muck around thinking about what you’d rather be doing!

Another great Virgo asset needs to come to the fore while going through this Mars tour of duty:  HUMOR.  Virgo is unsurpassed for its ability to mimic and literally poke fun at the idiosyncrasies and short comings  of us humans. Lots of Virgos are great comedians. One wonders whether the up coming election campaigns in the the United Stages won't be a huge collective comedy of errors since much of the brou-ha-ha will be going on during this Mars rite of passage. Another theme I can see in Virgo is the BABY STEPS one.  Virgo is not the place to long-distance run, or even short-distance sprint.  Mars will literally have to play that game that many of us are familiar with from our child-hood; remember ‘Simon Says’ or ‘Mother May I?’.   Remember that you had to follow the rules and got sent back to the beginning line if you didn’t?  Remember that feeling of itching to go, and you couldn’t just run non-stop to the goal?  Oh!  Such frustration!  Virgo will demand that Mars move carefully, and with great discrimination.  One false move and you’re out.  Ouch.

Once Mars moves into that retrograde phase between January 24th and April 14th (3 months), things will really slow down and a great deal of analysis will take place as false starts and false steps are sorted through.  Pay careful attention to anything in your chart from 23 degrees back to 3 degrees of any of the Mutable Signs (Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces, and Gemini).  This will be a time to carefully sort out what needs to be done to correct something in all four arenas, and once Mars turns direct, to carefully, and oh, so slowly, move forward with your carefully thought-out plans.  Note I’m emphasizing the word CAREFULLY.  Not exactly one of Mars favorite styles!

The final theme I want to mention (and there are obviously myriad themes) for Virgo is IMPECCABLE.  A true Virgo style is just that, impeccable.  Every little detail has been attended to.  With this goes the higher octave of INTEGRITY.  So the question to ask will be, “Am I acting impeccably in this situation?  Am I acting with the highest level of integrity I can muster?”

Mars, as an archetype, is our potency.  On this planet it represents our will to survive by getting us in touch with what we want, and what we have to do to get what we want.  How do you express your own potency?  Do you feel potent?  Or do you feel impotent?  Impotency creates victimization and pushes to the depths unconscious rage.  When such rage is blocked or suppressed, the Mars energy can be directed against oneself, or against the world outside oneself.  This type of blocked Mars energy in Virgo can result in sado-masochistic practices.  Jeff Green, the expert on Pluto and sexuality, has a lot to say about this theme in his books.

If we take that theme to the collective issues we are now facing on this planet regarding the right use, or the misuse of Mars energy, we can probably forecast that Mars in Virgo will be creating a collective crisis of enormous impact.  There will need to be in this equation the ability to collectively examine where acts of aggression are taking us.  Will there be the collective ability to critique ourselves with some humility?  Will there be the ability to step-by-step figure out how to take a natural urge in all of us and turn our Mars energy away from the ‘god of war’ back to it’s original blueprint as ‘the god of agriculture’?
We all know in our hearts that this is what has to happen, or we are all doomed to a scenario eventually straight out of ‘Mad Max Beyondthe Thunderdome.’.  I’m serious folks.  We really don’t have time to muck around with this primal energy that keeps us in our limbic brains.  Time is running out.

So there’s going to be a lot of necessary work ahead.  Mars in Virgo will help all of us as a collective provided that the ‘sadists’ among us are exposed and restrained, and some type of mass healing of the Pisces shadow of the last 2600 years of  predator (sadist)/victim (masochist) takes place.

There are many guides now available to those who want to awaken.  You won’t find these guides on TV, in politics, or in your local Chamber of Commerce.  They are not doing the ‘business as usual’ routine.  Virgo guides are going to be unobtrusive and humble people.  They’re not going to be leading out of a need for ego self-aggrandizement.  Just ask, and they will appear.  It’s that simple.  The veils are thinning between thought and synchronistic manifestation.

It’s important to note that Mars in Virgo, during this lengthy time, will catalyze the 1960s generation, especially as Uranus is now forming it’s waxing square to Pluto.  The revolutionary changes bolstered in 1966 when Uranus conjoined Pluto in Virgoimprinted all the souls born then.  This generation is now in their 40s, and moving into their power positions in society.  May enough of them have the courage to act impeccably and with added passion as the energies of 2012 gain momentum.

Finally, think about this:  During the next 235 days millions of babies will be born with Mars in Virgo.  Millions of them.  That’s a wowie to think about.  They will be turning 21 years in 2032.  May they all be blessed with the will to survive and work hard for a new world that is yet to be revealed, for they may very well be ‘the meek who inherit the Earth.’    Let this be a bountiful, heavenly Earth!
