Killiney Hill, Ireland

For many years, while visiting our daughter and her family in Ireland, I would take a daily walk on Killiney Hill in what some call the equivalent of the Riviera.

Picture
My walk would often wind past a fairy tale castle high on the cliffs over-looking the sea, surrounded by a great stone wall.  This wasEnya’s home; that famous Irish Taurus singer.

Sometimes I would continue my stroll down past a large estate barricaded from prying eyes with a solid piece of wood behind an iron wrought gate that belongs to another famous Irish Taurus musician, Bono.  How appropriate!  Two famous Taurus musicians living the good life in one of the most beautiful and bucolic parts of Ireland; yet one has never married nor had children, while the other has been solidly married a very long time with a number of children.

Taurus, like every other sign, embodies different styles and qualities of relating.  There is no ‘one size fits all’ with this sign either, though it is often described in highly stereotyped ways as being solid, earthy, sensual, practical, stubborn, and bull-headed.  Well, yes, many characteristics of the element Earth are strongly formed in this first of the three Earth signs, Taurus.  There are nuances, however, to every individual Taurus and it’s best to factor in those qualities when looking to relate to anyone of Sun, Moon, Ascendant, and/or personal planets in this sign.

Picture
Think about the Taurus people you know.  What is your relationship with them like?  Do you feel safe with them?  Can you rely on them?  Do they feel grounded to you?  How do you handle their anger when it does show up?  Can you see any of the qualities of the ancient symbolism of this sign in them:  the bull or the cow?  Most of us have heard that delightful story of Ferdinand the Bull relaxing in his field of flowers, super contended and happy until along comes that dammed bee!  Do you ever play the ‘bee’ in the life of the Taurus you are in relationship with?  I’m asking because someone or something always does!  Best to know which part you play in this archetypal theme.  It seems Taurus people actually need that bee once in a while to prevent them from becoming inert.  How does Taurus get motivated in life?
Picture
I was reading a bit about Enya who prefers the sanctuary of her castle to socializing.  Her motivation is always the music.  She’ll move on out there for that.  And many Taurus people are highly creative in the arts.  They love beauty, music, and all the experiences of the senses which make life pleasurable.  The sweet sting of desire will motivate them to participate in life with others or help them to excel in a craft or skill.  Looking at some of the real people that I actually know who are sun sign Taurus I see several singers and musicians, an interior designer, a creator of high-end skin care products, a creator of high-end home accents like candles and aromatics, a photographer, a glass blower, a sculptor, and an art dealer.  I know Taurus people who are truly either ‘Lord of the Manor’ types or ‘Lady of the Manor’ types.  They create an oasis, the Garden of Eden right where they live.

These are often beautiful people.  Look at the roster of famous entertainers who fit that bill:  Audrey Hepburn, Kathryn Hepburn, David Beckman, George Clooney, Jessica Alba, Pierce Brosnan, Penelope Cruz, Kirsten Dunst, Linda Evangelista, Cher, Gary Cooper, Bianca Jagger, Al Pacino, Eva Peron, and on and on.  The Taurus type does appreciate the body and being in it, so let’s say they ‘celebrate the body’ and how it looks and what it can do.

Picture
Remember, this is a Venus ruled sign.  Venus represents love and beauty, but she also represents serenity combined with pleasure.  I loved that scene in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen where he encounters Venus, played by that Taurus beauty, Uma Thurman.  She rises effortlessly above her husband, Vulcan, sweating in his fiery forge and floats about with sweet indolence.  The sensate type is usually attracted to Fire.  Fire, like the bee sting, creates drama and spontaneity for Taurus and Fire provides much needed inspiration as well.  It can be an uneasy alliance for Fire types may feel suffocated by the literal realism of Taurus just as Taurus may find their fiery partners too impractical and unstable.  This fusion of Earth and Fire, however, is an alchemical mix which can produce enormous creative power.  As Liz Greene says in her book on relating, “Every deity owes Vulcan something for he forges from the Earth the attributes of power.”

What are some of the other attributes that Taurus will bring to the dance of relationship? Rather than just enumerate these I’ll try to illustrate from my own life.  If we were all sitting in a circle discussing this, it would be so interesting to hear your own stories of ‘life with a Taurus’.

I lived with a Taurus room-mate for a couple of years.  We were both in our early 20s needing to bunch up to survive the high rents in a large city.  She was a beautiful and sexy flight attendant who traveled a great deal.  I was a struggling single Mom with two small children to take care of.  She did have affection for them but also tolerated them amazingly well in spite of the fact that she would come in after a long flight dead tired.  On the other hand, she didn’t put up with a lot of nonsense either.  She would say what she wanted to without fanfare; not exactly like a Sagittarian, but very matter-of-factly.  I saw her as extremely grounded and reliable.  My first room-mate had been a Gemini and she was good socially with the children but definitely not reliable in terms of all the nefarious characters she brought into our apartment.  My Taurus roommate kept her private life just that—-separate.  She had a wild side just as I did—-we were young adults in the big city —-but that never interfered with her work.  Never.

She also knew how to deal with the real world.  Such a great quality to have!  She studied the laws and knew her rights, and she fought hard for them.  I was always in admiration of this quality in her.  She stood up to the corporate world many times and always won.  Later we moved to a large home in Marin where the good life beckoned.  Before moving out we had an altercation with our landlady who was basically trying to get out of paying us back our deposit.  What did my Taurus roommate do but say, “Let’s take her to small claims court.”  We did, and we won!  Do you see what I’m getting at here?  This young woman had determination combined with her savvy understanding of how the world works to get what she needed from it.  It was a quality that I wasn’t that good at, being a Pisces.  I learned a lot from her.  She went on to buy her own home and has been there ever since where she surrounds herself with beauty and art, of course.  That doesn’t mean that she hasn’t had her adventures.  She’s not what you would call simple.  I really want to make this point clear.  Taurus people are not necessarily boring and pedestrian.  She would go to places like Katmandu and got her nose pierced long before anyone else had heard of such things.  She’d travel to Guatemala and come back in braids laced with ribbons dressed in a weipiel.  Of course I’m talking about someone with Taurus Sun in the 9th house!  So you have to factor in a lot of variables.  There are certain archetypal themes, but endless variations on those themes for each sign.

Picture
We have a daughter and granddaughter who are born under this sign.  Our daughter was such a happy child of the natural world.  I remember the first time I took her into the ocean and a wave suddenly swept over both of us as I held her tight.  She emerged laughing like a little Aphrodite.  Another memory is when my present husband and I were courting and she caught us making love one afternoon. Keep in mind she was only about five years old at that time. She later called it ‘wiggling’ and a bit later after that said, “Everybody does it, don’t they?  It’s natural.”  The body was always her source of energy, sustenance, and delight.  No wonder she’s so gifted today teaching Synergy Dance.  She loves to celebrate the temple we all live in, our bodies.

Another thing I’d like to say about having her as a Taurus daughter is that she was easy.  She required virtually no discipline and she was truly the reliable big sister to her young siblings whom she became chief babysitter for when I needed her.  She made mothering virtually care free for me!

Picture
Our granddaughter was named Persephone; that is, the Goddess of Spring Persephone.  Of course the other end of the spectrum is Scorpio, and Persephone in the myth also became Queen of the Underworld.   As an adult I’m sure Persephone will have that depth of understanding that allows for the full spectrum of life.  As a child she’s been remarkably like Shirley Temple, another Taurus with a lot of Gemini.  She loves to dance, sing, and play the piano, the guitar, and even act.  The arts are all her playing field.  She has great artistic flair and it gives endless delight to watch her move so effortlessly from one skill to another.  This little Taurus was hard to catch to feed her (all that Gemini), but now that she’s older she relishes really fine cuisine, especially sushi!  Food is not a problem with her when traveling.  She likes to try the foods of the world; a true Taurus epicurean already.

I know I’m describing many of the fine qualities that have endeared Taurus people to me, but what about that ‘shadow side’?  Every sign has it.   One member of our extended family has stubbornly refused to communicate for years.  This person simply stopped abruptly all contact and won’t discuss it nor respond to all the overtures and even pleas towards resolving the long hiatus.  This means there is no possibility for closure.  This type of stonewalling to the death is what creates huge long-term rifts in families, and is terribly damaging for generations to come.  You can see this on a more collective scale in countries as well.  Israel’s Taurus government would be a good example of such locked in qualities of no compromise; fixed, stubborn, and bull-headed.  Shadow stuff indeed. (There’s a good article in THE MOUNTAIN ASTROLOGER, Dec/Jan 2006/2007 issue entitled Under Dark Stars, The War Between Israel and Hezbollah by Bernhard Bergbauer).  I don’t have time in an article of this nature to look at the wider collective issues that embroil an entire nation in conflicts, but it is worth noting that astrology can lend much light on the nature of these just by studying the inception charts of nations.

What is it about a sign that can be so tender, gentle, and affectionate becoming stone cold and seemingly heartless?  Remember, Taurus is fixed earth.  This is a power sign.  Earth without fire is cold.  It might be better to see the bull of rage, because that will at least release the fire and perhaps shift the stone-walling.  A healthy release of anger can be beneficial rather than staying locked into age-long feuds where no one wins.  This black and white quality of the sign keeps them forever right in their fixity while projecting onto the other all the wrongs.  Our human population is now full of this type of dogmatic narrow-mindedness and over possessiveness regarding ‘this is mine and I’m going to make sure you don’t get it’ stance whether between individuals or nations.  In the Jungian perspective the inferior function of fire within earthy Taurus is stunted intuition which leads to irrational fears and vague paranoia negatively charged and projected onto ‘the other’.

So Taurus needs more vision.  Taurus people need to realize that there are subtleties and undercurrents not necessarily visible that create the complexities of life.  They need to reach across the great divide and embrace their opposite, Scorpio, to realize that life can not be reduced to black and white themes, or simply the facts that are experienced only with the senses.  Scorpio leads into the underworld of feelings that must be experienced.  Feelings can not be described through rationality.  True vision comes from sensing intuitively all the strands of any given situation that extend through time and space in invisible pathways that can be murky and chaotic as well as clear, bright, and light.

Picture
Going back to the Taurus member of our family who refuses to connect at all; this keeps a chasm of feelings, like a river gorge running deep and turbulent, forever inaccessible within our family that can never be bridged and will, sadly, continue through his children and their children, as it already has, as quite the opposite of what Taurus revels in, the garden of Eden of contentment. This is the power of a Taurus.  This power can be wielded for good or ill.  It truly is a lasting, fixed power, and thus a grave responsibility once Taurus becomes conscious. (But I have good news!  Just today a slight bridge was made by making another attempt to connect from this side.  There’s still hope for healing.  Remember, you can coax.  The more you push, the greater the resistance.)

The question remains, does Taurus hold steadfast in relationships out of habit and inertia or loyalty?  They will hang in there through thick and thin when their less stable kin would simply move on either from frustration or boredom. They are often the rock that others cling to for their strength and proclivity to endure.  I feel some certainly remain absolutely loyal and trustworthy while others may just be creatures of habit.  The key, as with anything else, is consciousness.

The highest ideal of Taurus is  Buddha-consciousness.  The Taurus born Buddha exemplified the principle of non-attachment and peace knowing that this is a world where suffering exists.  Maintaining mindfulness and peacefulness in spite of all suffering is a worthy goal for all of us wherever Taurus is in our birth maps.  Such power exists in this sign to change the world to a peaceful garden of delights once again!

Let’s now look at Taurus in relationship to the other elements and signs:

Taurus with Earth:  When studying Medical Astrology with Dr. Ingrid Naiman years ago I learned that the element of Earth is dry, heavy, and cold.  It’s true that two earth signs would probably create a great deal of stability and financial security with each other, but after awhile if neither had much fire or water, or air things would drop down into potential lethargy and become ‘dry, heavy, and cold’.  Doesn’t sound like much fun, does it?

Taurus with Taurus:  I honestly could not find any examples either from famous charts or from my own personal files on this combination.  Help me out readers!  It does feel that two ‘bulls’ might lock horns eventually.  Two ‘cows’?  Oh dear, I’m not going in a very good direction with this analogy!  Perhaps if one Taurus had a good deal of Aries and the other a good deal of Gemini it might just work.  They would certainly need something to enliven their relationship.

Picture
Taurus with Virgo:  This is an easy Earth trine relationship leaning towards material improvement obviously.  What a great combination to accomplish work together either as craftspeople or scholars, or even farming.  This is a very solid and industrious combination; not so much for leadership as for great financial acumen. Virgo could certainly take the solid values of Taurus to a level of masterful skill.  They could have a natural and wholesome life together, these two.  The only famous couple I could come up with was Audrey Hepburn and Mel Ferrar.  They were both actors, so the craftsmanship theme was applicable.  However, their marriage didn’t last.

Taurus with Capricorn:  Another easy Earth trine combination where organized accomplishment together is a great possibility.  Since Capricorn likes to have a plan and Taurus may willingly work towards that plan they might have a lot to show for themselves if they stay together.  Certainly stability is a strong suit.  This is actually a powerful sexual combination, a good example being William Randolph Hearst and his mistress, the actress Marian Davies.  He was the Taurus, she the Capricorn.  She actually had to give up her ambitions to maintain this relationship however; something a modern woman might not be willing to do now.

Picture
Picture
The on-screen charisma of Capricorn Cary Grant with both Taurus leading ladies shows how compelling this combination can be, even if only professionally.  This could be a great combination for working together in the fields of architecture, building, landscaping, and even the arts where wood, stone, and clay are employed.  These two can create beauty that lasts! Even in businesses which produce cosmetics, clothing, and luxury items this is a great combo.  Well, Marion certainly must have enjoyed San Simeon’s luxurious digs!

Taurus with Air:  Air is light, dry, and cold.  If earth is heavy, dry, and cold, the only differential here is heavy versus light.  Dryness is a problem!  Yet in couples, this combination actually works quite well as a rule.  Air type people often need someone more pragmatic to ground their flights into either mental activity or fantasy (if they have water combined), while Air people bring to Taurus the lightness and even brightness that they need to uplift their spirits.

Picture
Taurus with Gemini:  These two are side-by-side with Taurus naturally evolving towards Gemini.  Probably Taurus has personal planets in Gemini, just as Gemini has something in Taurus, so there’s an over-lap of energies going on.  This is a good combination also for building together either through business, commerce, or intellectual pursuits.  The mercurial mind of Gemini creates the modifications that Taurus’ sensibility towards security impels.  Since Taurus as a power sign is good with money, Gemini brings multiple ideas to the table to enliven all the possibilities for enriching their lives together.  I certainly know several couples with this combination who have stood the test of time.   One famous power couple is Queen Elizabeth(the Taurus) with her Prince Phillip (the Gemini).  She would need an adaptable partner willing to allow her to be the ‘fixed royal Queen.
Picture
Taurus with Libra:  While these two must adjust to the different qualities in each for Taurus is fixed earth, while Libra is cardinal air, they both are ruled by Venus and thus I’ve seen couples with this combination who have endured even though ‘adjustments’ were necessary.  One lovely couple that I know is working collaboratively together on a book which the Libran has written based on his expertise in his field, and the solid Taurus wife is editing to perfection.  Eva Peron, the Taurus, married Juan Peron, the politician.  He must have appreciated her beauty and grace, and she made good use of his great wealth to help people that she understood and valued having struggled herself to survive the great levels of poverty that existed in Argentina during that time.  The recent film The Iron Lady starring Meryl Streep portrayed the relationship between the most active and politically ambitious, Margaret Thatcher (Libran), and her much grounded businessman husband,Denis Thatcher (Taurus).  He was a reliable presence in her life until his death, and the movie gave a poignant view of her later yearning for his presence as she declined into dementia.
Picture
Taurus with Aquarius:  This is a challenging combination since both are fixed and of different elements.  Taurus would prefer the slower evolutionary route, while Aquarius seeks the more revolutionary.  Taurus is basically realistic and conservative while Aquarius is iconoclastic and has broad humanitarian ideals to feed.  However, if they succeed together Taurus can perhaps fund the progressive projects that Aquarius wishes to engage in, but only if Taurus deems them realistic! The other issue is how energy gets exchanged and Aquarius may distant itself from the earthy vibe of Taurus. One famous couple with this combination was Cher and Sonny Bono.  While their public image was highly successful and they did collaborate musically in a powerful and highly profitable way, we know their private life was definitely not made in heaven.  Still, this is a good example of how love can supersede the challenges of energy differences, at least for awhile.

Taurus with Water:  The watery realm will find in Taurus a haven, a strong rock-like container, while water signs will soothe and smooth Taurus.   It’s the wetness of water that so compliments the dryness of earth.  They are both Yin which means they are receptive by nature and both want to preserve and conserve.

Picture
Taurus with Cancer:  These two are definitely drawn to each other and can be incredibly compatible.  Archetypally this is the quintessential ‘establishment of the home’ combo.  Taurus being so solidly grounded in biological instincts works well with Cancer’s need to nest and get homey.  Taurus can take in stride the ups and downs of Cancer’s moods while Cancer nurtures Taurus’ need for lots of affection.  If this is a married couple they have the capacity to work patiently towards securing their assets for home, family, and property.  This is another excellent business combination and Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers certainly proved that through their amazing dance partnership.  Fred was the Taurus in the duo. Ginger, actually was married five times!!  She was steadier with her show business partner it seems.  Three other famous couples are worth mentioning in this combo:  William Randolph Hearst and his wife, Millicent.  She was the Cancer and wouldn’t give him a divorce.  She greatly benefited as the wife on so many levels, but especially in maintaining her role as a socialite which she couldn’t have done without his money and status.  He, being the Taurus, didn’t rock the boat and had his Capricorn mistress who actually ended up supporting him in his old age!  Jack Nicholson (the Taurus) and Angelica Huston (the Cancer) were together a very long time considering Jack’s lusty appetite.  She must have satisfied him as long as anyone could.  Finally, Barbra Streisand, another Taurus with the voice like honey, and her present husband, James Brolin (the Cancer) are a cozy pair who have hunkered down domestically in a very compatible way.

Taurus with Scorpio:  Opposites but complementary?  Not too many famous couples to validate this.  I do know one couple personally who have weathered the ups and downs of any long marriage together beautifully.  They share now artistic values and pursuits though both chose separate paths of professional life.  We have two power signs here at opposite ends of the spectrum.  Keep in mind that Taurus would act as the container for Scorpio—earth contains water.  Scorpio likes to go deep and Scorpio is one of the more complex signs.  Let’s think of this combination in nature; a deep lake perhaps?  Or a deep river?  Taurus eventually does learn all the subtleties and the process will deepen them.  Scorpio gets the benefit of someone who by nature will be calm and unruffled when Scorpio goes through intense periods of transformation.  It certainly can work!  Some call this the ‘generation vs. regeneration’ combination.  Both are sexual signs, and both are money signs.  The very nature of desire will be a theme in this union, and the higher the consciousness of both, the more powerful the transformation for both.  I would say that this combination affords great soul growth if the two are willing to go the lengths and depths that it requires.  Again, no famous couples were discovered.  Perhaps you, the reader, may know of one.

Picture
Taurus with Pisces:  These two are compatible especially when it comes to love of beauty.  Venus is exalted in Pisces where material values transcend into spiritual ones.  This combination is the stuff dreams are made of due to the romantic possibilities, and the poetic, as well as a potentially profound appreciation for nature.  Taurus, again, is the container for Pisces.  This potential was there whenAudrey Hepburn married Dr. Andrea Dotti, the Italian psychiatrist.  What happened?  His libidinous desire for younger women ruined a good thing probably.  Beautiful Audrey never married after trying a Virgo (Mel) and the opposite sign, Pisces (Andrea).  She, like Enya, remained single and in her later years put all her Taurus values into charitable work with African children and also starred in the wonderful documentary The Gardens of the World.  Who could have done it better than a beautiful Taurus with Moon in Pisces?

Taurus with Fire:  Taurus, as mentioned above, is drawn to Fire signs for their abundant energy and verve.  The pulse of excitement is a stimulus for Taurus and truly provides the ‘sweet sting’ they need, or the ‘sting which provokes them to becoming the raging bull’.  Taurus may feel used at times by fire due to their need to keep things on an even keel financially and practically.  They may feel that they are the givers while Fire takes due to its self-centeredness.  Fire, however, brings the warmth and lightness that Taurus needs for inspiration and drama.

Taurus with Aries:  This is actually a winning combination full of ‘Power couples’.  Aries is side-by-side with Taurus and in this case, Taurus leads Aries on towards manifestation of ideals and inspirations.  Taurus consolidates the activity of Aries.

Picture
Let’s look at the roster of couples I found with this combo:  David(Taurus) and Victoria (Aries) Beckham are now world famous for their beauty as a couple and even style.  She’s become quite enterprising with her fashion businesses and his charisma as a major athlete makes her the envy of probably millions of women.  They have lots of children together and seem totally bonded, at least publicly.
Picture
Bono (Taurus) and his wife, Alison Hewson (Aries) also have a lively, long-lived union with lots of children.  It’s been reported that he’s difficult at times with his intense Full Moon in Scorpio polarity.  Alison’s lighter Moon in Gemini probably navigates nimbly through and around him.  Her Sun in Aries is actually conjoining his Mars in Pisces.  It’s complicated I’m sure, but they have managed to stay bonded and in love all these years. He’s Yin and she’s Yang.
Picture
The classic and scandalous Kathryn Hepburn (Taurus)/Spencer Tracy (Aries) union is still a topic of endless fascination.  Interesting that he wouldn’t divorce his wife because of his religious beliefs (a lot of Sagittarian in his chart) and she stayed faithful and was the one at his side when he died.  She had a lot of earth staying power with both Sun & Moon in Taurus.
Picture
The final couple in this winning combination is George Lucas(Taurus) and his partner, Mellody Hobson (Aries).  She’s a modern-day high powered business woman and definitely not looking for a sugar daddy.  More power to them both!
Picture
Taurus with Leo:  Again we have two fixed power signs with the potential to make big sparks or blow each other up.  The sexual draw would be enormous here though issues of ownership and loyalty could destroy the union.  It’s a challenging combination for sure since Taurus wants to settle in comfortably and Leo wants to call his soul his own.  Stubbornness versus pride could bring things to an end if neither is willing to yield when conflicts arise.  Bowing to each other in respect is the solution and one couple I know have simply become ‘friends’.  That alliance has stood the test of time and thus Aquarius/Air became the right alchemical ingredient to resolve past wounds.  I have found one famous couple with this combination, and they did not last:  Bianca (Taurus) and Mick (Leo) Jagger.  They must have had passion to spare in their early days, but something did blow them apart.  Jagger will always be king.  Bianca has gone on to another productive and even wise woman, like Audrey.
Picture
Taurus with Sagittarius:   This is another combination which requires a great deal of adjusting to each other since fiery Sagittarius is mutable and hard to corral.  Such a combination in business could be excellent because Sagittarius likes the goal and planning ahead, while Taurus provides the common sense to keep building the assets.  As a romantic pair the only couple I have found thus far isCher (Taurus) with Greg Allman (Sagittarius), and that union was probably volatile and ultimately failed.  Come to think of it, Cher, likeEnya and Audrey, and even Kathryn Hepburn is choosing to be with herself primarily.  Taurus can be self-reliant like Virgo in this sense.  The growth towards self-esteem that goes with Taurus can turn into self-sufficiency.

This concludes my sign-to-sign comparisons for Taurus.  I’m certainly grateful for these people who help many of the rest of us to enjoy being in our bodies and all the sensual pleasures of life, but also create a grounded presence in our lives that sustains us, for Taurus, like the earth itself, endures through thick and thi

Come on!  Are you ready to go sky diving?  Go on a trek up into the Himalayas?  Take off for parts unknown and have an adventure?  If so, you’re good for relating to Aries, that place in each of us which wants and needs spontaneity and a challenge.

But what about the real people in your life who are either Sun-sign Aries or have strong signatures in that sign like Ascendant, Moon, or personal planets in Aries?  I’d like to explore the principles of that sign where relationships are concerned and relay some anecdotal stories as illustrative of those themes.

From my experience all people with strong Aries qualities are doers.  They aren’t the types who like to sit around talking for hours on end.  They get too restless and bored.  If you want a good conversation with an Aries, take a walk with them or go on a jaunt somewhere, get out and play, and then share conversation over a nice meal perhaps.  They have that ‘bip bip’ energy, so don’t drag them down or hold them back.

Picture
My Aries Mother at 3 years

They have a freshness, a child-likeness, even a sweetnessthat is decidedly not world-weary in demeanor.  No one talks much about their sweetness, but I find it true of both sexes though Aries men are quite masculine to be sure.  They are anything but wimps.  Still, they can play with wee children in the gentlest manner and connect with that wonderful openness that all natural, healthy children possess.  I think of my father-in-law who was this very manly Aries who had worked in a meat-packing plant from the age of 14 years on, later becoming an inspector.  Wally was also a hunter and fisherman.  Yet no one was kinder or more gentle really.  He was a big sweet man!

Aries women are both sweet and fierce in one.  They can kick-ass without relinquishing their femininity.  They often have very girlish voices, though an occasional Bette Davis type may appear amongst them (she smoked a lot, however!)  They are equally good at outdoor athletics and intellectual pursuits, and they are always ready to go when the urge moves them.  Nostalgia for by-gone days is not something they indulge in.

They are often animal lovers and animal rights activists.  I remember well one day when our Aries daughter at the ripe age of 10 years announced at the dinner table that she was no longer going to eat any meat.  And that was that!  She stuck to her guns in spite of the fact that she had loved raw meat even.  Later she even refused to wear anything made from animals as well.  I have a wonderful Aries client who is a horse lover.  She communicates with her horses as if they were human and I do believe she sees them often as more intelligent as well!

Picture
Most Aries types are idealistic in their bravery, and that, too, keeps them young.  Robin Hood is the classic male Aries archetype who champions the poor and oppressed by challenging the rich, corrupt establishment.  He rescues damsels in distress as well.  Allowing for the heroic in her man is a wise attitude in any woman relating to an Aries male.  The Aries male needs to be the ‘Knight in Shining Armor’ or risk the fate of ‘Jason and the Argonauts’ if he doesn’t treat his woman with respect.  Lots of Aries men have been leading-men in the movies portraying the warrior archetype in some manner such as Russell Crowe of ‘The Gladiator’ fame, Michael Fassbender, Marlon Brando, Spencer Tracy, Alec Baldwin, and even director Francis Ford Coppola with both his ‘Godfather’ series and‘Apocalypse Now’.
Picture
The Aries woman may embody the ‘Joan of Arc’ archetype by having a mission, a cause which calls upon her vision, her ideals, and bravery to champion. A recent (July 2011), very funny article in Rolling Stone even depicts Aries Michele Bachmann as a Joan of Arc wielding her bloody sword and red bible aloft. More intelligent Aries crusading women are Gloria Steinem, Maya Angelou, and even Lady Gaga with her ‘stop the bullying’ campaign.
Picture
Kristen Stewart, an Aries actress, is starring in a new version of Snow White entitled ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’.   Here’s a new twist which brings out the Aries archetype beautifully within that timeless classic; she’s the Aries innocent and sweet young woman combined with the fierce warrioress who challenges the wicked queen by joining forces with her male Aries- counterpart, the Huntsman.  Even‘The Hunger Games’ movie, which made it’s public entrance on March 23rd at the beginning of Aries,  portrays this renewed archetype of the strong, brave woman who faces the demonic entrenched, and corrupt power of the establishment by pitting her energy in competition and battle.  ‘The ‘Hunger Games’ strikes another cord around the Uranus in Aries square Pluto in Capricorn themes which we’re all now living through.

This leads to another major theme in Aries:  independence.  If you want to stay in harmony with an Aries it’s best to honor their driving need for autonomy and freedom.  Many an Aries will up and leave when they perceive themselves to be chained too tightly to another, or in a situation which makes them feel entrapped.  It is this quality which also most irks and injures those who feel they’ve supported them over long stretches in their often impulsive quests.  The feeling of abandonment can be great in those left behind, and the Aries may not be able to completely verbalize this urge in any way that makes sense to their bereaved ex-partner, parent, or even friend.  It is Aries very nature to be self-willed and that often is experienced by others as being selfish and unwilling to compromise.

What are sacred to Aries are their dreams and the romantic possibility of something magical and heroic that they can pour their passion and ardor into.  A partner who can enter in to that dream and join in the adventure is what keeps the fires burning in Aries’ heart, but, as Liz Greene stated “Romantic liaisons often begin as a fairy tale and end in a cage…..This is no fun at all, since the propensity for unreliability in relationships leads to tremendous loneliness and a big, fat sense of failure.”

Again, we are only looking at this one-dimensional aspect of Aries.  Most people with Sun, Ascendant, Moon, etc in the sign also have planets in other elements such as earth, water, or air.  Also, because Aries progresses through time into the next sign of Taurus, then Gemini, and perhaps finally Cancer, there is the likelihood of greater wholeness that evolves over a lifetime. Yet the thesis of Aries is intended to predominate which suggests that to be a fire-energized Self is the heroic quest of all those born into this sign.

Let’s now look at Aries in relationship to the other elements and signs:

Aries with Fire:

Fire fuels fire with sparks of enthusiasm, fun, passion, and spontaneity.  Fire needs fire, for all the other elements can put Fire out.  Water douses fire out, Earth snuffs fire out, and Air blows fire out.  No wonder fire is drawn to other fire signs.  It’s really the most vulnerable of the elements yet feels like it’s the most dangerous.  Fire signs are more prone to depression if their fire goes out.  When I see this in a client, I always encourage them to co-mingle with other fire types to get sparked again.

Aries with Aries = like two fresh souls joining in to the adventure of life, this can certainly work.  I know of one long married couple who founded a wonderful enterprise here in the Foothills involving the Earth and growing things of beauty and medicinal value (no, not what you’re thinking/ha!).  They are now world famous and teach and do trainings together, both Aries.  Their business is their special child and they treat it as if it were.  I think it has worked because they both probably retain a certain degree of independence within the sphere that they are good at.  It is also because the business keeps them always growing and stretching and never bored.
Probably this combination won’t work when one partner isn’t carrying equal weight or they have stopped having adventures together.

Picture
My Aries Mother in her '80s

Aries with Leo = This is an easy trine relationship with Leo carrying more weight because it is Fixed in mode.  This combination can support personal self-expression where the initiative of Aries reinforces the enthusiasm of Leo and they can engage in creative projects together which are both brave and bold, bright and beautiful.  Together they can put on quite an impressive show in life!  They can also have a lot of fun together.  I remember well when at 69 years my Aries mother remarried a Leo.  She said she wanted ‘an honest man’ and she got one.  He was so honest he was brutally blunt at times, but she endured that more abrasive side of him because they did travel a great deal and had some truly good times for 18 years.  He was a bit of a curmudgeon who’d had a rough and tumble life heading unions.  She was more refined having been a minister’s wife and a college professor.  She yielded to his sovereignty by selling her beautiful home and moving north to be with him in his working-class neighborhood.  The money from her home became their ‘fun money’ and they were loveable companions to the very end with him saying on his death-bed that he was going to heaven to be with her on the other side.  Fiery love in the golden years.

Aries with Sagittarius = This is considered one of the best combinations for Aries of all the signs.  One author goes as far as to say it is the only one because both are enthusiastic and ready to throw themselves into the relationship with complete abandon.  I’ve definitely seen this happen.  Both are progressives and happiness together can be as much about an inner state of repore as an outer camaraderie.  They both move and groove on inspiration and intuition and push each other on to new directions as they grow and experiment together.  Having a mutual vision helps.

Aries with Earth:

Aries is often drawn to Earth for the substance and solidity with which Earth signs can help Aries manifest their dreams.  Their abundant energy does make a nice blend with the practicality of earth, though earthy types may find Aries a bit too pushy.  Aries may need to work at creating or maintaining the excitement they so thrive on.  The shadow side of Aries may be their fear of the body itself, which Earth revels in.  The body is too confining, restrictive, or too formed in certain respects for the idealization of Aries.  Since Earth is the least prone to fantasies and likes basic, sensual, matter-of-fact scenarios, Aries can truly get into situations which sexually become boring or where they feel they’re asked to perform like a machine.  Remember, Aries is more of a sprinter than a long-distance runner.

Aries with Taurus = These two are side-by-side with Aries bringing something into being while Taurus attempts to find its worth or value.  Aries is the trailblazer seeking freedom while Taurus is the settler seeking security and stability.  Aries isn’t concerned with ownership unless it morphs into some new enterprise, while Taurus identifies with what is owned and possessed.  Sexually Aries seeks release while Taurus wants progeny as tangible proof of potency.  Aries is the ‘Star-ship enterprise going where no man has gone before (and, by the way, William Shatner, who played Captain Kirk, is an Aries as is George Takei who played Lt. Sulu) while Taurus extends only to create a strong base for further construction.    Marcia Moore called this combination ‘Consolidation of Activity’ and if two people with strong notes in both signs join forces together this is a possibility.  While I can’t recall two sun-signs together I do know of plenty combinations where one might have Sun in Aries while the other has Moon in Taurus, etc.

Aries with Virgo = Now here’s an interesting combination.  Moore’s term is ‘Differentiation’.  Yes, they both must adjust to very different forms of energy in each other.  Aries is Cardinal Fire whilst Virgo is Mutable Earth, yet both want independence and the pursuit of individuation.  Both are sharp, keen thinkers who like to pursue specific, personal goals, and both may, indeed, specialize to do so.  Another way of looking at this is that Aries will initiate the ego-building process while Virgo climaxes and attempts to master it.  This relationship works if both defer to the other’s self-reliance.  Virgo may have to curb the tendency to criticize and Aries may have to curb the desire to push.

Aries with Capricorn =  What these two share in common is a need for action, but Aries will strike out boldly and wave the banner of independence, moving on to other goals if too much red tape intervenes while Capricorn will plod along resolutely in order to endure and eventually reach the goal after much bureaucratic frustrations and delays.  The shadow of both is sensitivity where Aries really, secretly wants people to like them while Capricorn is sensitive to feelings of abandonment. These two could actually accomplish much together so long as Capricorn doesn’t act too much like Eyore and squelch Aries’ enthusiastic fire, and Aries concedes that manifestation of enduring forms can support further new pursuits in the long-run under the watchful planning of Capricorn.

Aries with Air:

This is a very Yang combination which is both complementary and highly combustible.  Air can often articulate what Aries intuits as well as offering encouragement to Aries’ enthusiasm.  If both agree on an idea or project they can work well together.  The Fire of Aries often fans the mind of Air and sparks do fly which are heady and high for both.

Aries with Gemini = This is such a witty combination and works really well in friendships especially.  There is such stimulus here for novelty and change which keeps both their bodies and minds actively on the go.  Gemini extends the power of Aries and they can both throw themselves energetically into new endeavors.  Both like change and Gemini’s love of variety keeps Aries fresh and never bored.  Staying grounded is another matter for these two high-flying signs.

Aries with Libra = is an oppositional kind of relationship, though both are part of one long continuum if they wish to see it that way.  Aries stands for personal liberty and Libra stands for laws which govern right relationships.  If they can express love freely and honor the independence of each this is a union that can grow into self-realization through exchange with the beloved.  Both are natural romantics at heart.  It may very well be that ‘Beauty and the Beast’ is classic Aries/Libra for the former implies raw, primal instincts while the later wishes to civilize and refine such urges into a loving dance of equals.

Aries with Aquarius = is a grand, energetic combination of two ‘libertarians’.  Both favor independence and the Aquarian can lend social consciousness to the Aries eagerness to champion something worthy of their courage.  Originality can blossom here because the fixed qualities of Aquarius blend easily with the entrepreneurship of Aries to invent and create new modern technologies that will endure.  As lovers this combination is good for the modern egalitarian life-style of free-thinkers.

Aries with Water:

This is a combination better suited to more traditional relationships and can deteriorate into co-dependency unless both are consciously alert for the warning signs.  Water is sensitive and often moody by Aries standards, though Water can also open up new realms of discovery for Aries if they are willing to explore the deeper waters of feeling.  Aries can pull Water out of the doldrums when necessary and even champion their vulnerable side as bright knights to the rescue.

Aries with Cancer = In an individual this combination is sweet, child-like, and totally affectionate.  This can also be a nice combination between two lovers though Aries might feel uncomfortable with Cancer’s sensitivity and Cancer may also ask for more commitment than Aries is willing to give.  Aries, on the other hand, may feel dishonored if Cancer is in any way deceitful or manipulative, for they like directness whereas Cancer finds it almost impossible to be that straight forward and guileless.  Moore calls this combo ‘Activity vs. Passivity’.  I’ve known it to work in couples whose love transcends the obvious clash of styles.  In this modern world if the man is a Cancer he may accept the nurturing role more easily.  I grew up with an Aries mother and a Cancer father.  His generation over-compensated for their inherent sensitivity by being super macho.  My mother was always upbeat and—yes—-brave, while my father was constantly alternating between a fiery temper (he had Mars in Aries) and a depleted neediness for empathy and comfort which took him into devious sexual addictions.  My mother suffered in silence until one day she simply lowered the boom and ended the marriage.  She later told me that she didn’t trust her ability to stay strong in his presence, so persuasive was he. Rather than relent and take him back, she chose to simply sever all further contact.

Aries with Scorpio = Keep in mind that both are Mars ruled, though Scorpio has the added rulership of Pluto to master.  Much psychological adjustment is needed for this combination to work.  The vital force for both is strong with the Scorpio’s sustained passion feeling thwarted if Aries bolts.  If both are strong in character, together they could motivate each other and periodically throw off the shackles of the past in order to phoenix-like start all over again.  Together they have the capacity to grapple with tough jobs by using vigorous, and when necessary, drastic methods.  Resentment is the shadow in this relationship and anger turned toxic can lethally destroy the passion that enflamed them initially.

Aries with Pisces = These two, side-by-side, are opposites in that Pisces lives to renounce and endlessly sacrifice its ego while Aries lives to assert its ego and develop the strength of an individualized core self.  Pisces must allow for dissolution while swimming in a sea of memories of which Aries tries valiantly to extricate itself from and simply move forward with raw kinetic power struggling to be free of the bondage which Pisces may willingly accept with compassionate understanding.  Yet Pisces is drawn to Aries for the same reason that Aries is drawn to Taurus; to move forward towards hope and a bright new beginning.  Often Aries sun-signs will have a bit of Pisces in their make-up which brings a resonance and even empathy with Pisces.  Pisces can certainly ‘understand’ Aries even if it hurts inside to see them so independent and seemingly disconnected.

That concludes my sign-to-sign comparisons.  Keep well in mind that the art of synastry in astrology is complex and less than perfect in determining why some relationships fail and others thrive irregardless of the planetary influences and combinations.  As I said in my first article, the alchemy of relationship always has the added ingredient of consciousness in the mix.  Two unconscious people may up their chances of success by using correct astrological formulas while two highly conscious people may succeed in spite of the challenges of their energy combinations.  I even think that some couples choose each other to grow spiritually because the conflicts force love to grow in ways it wouldn’t were things too easy.

Our Aries Granddaughter

Parenting or grand parenting an Aries child can be sheer delight, absolute terror, or both!  The high energy and alertness of an Aries child is refreshing, even exhilarating.  They can be little whirling dervishes and hard to get to bed at night unless you’re willing to sit and read them wonderful stories of magic and bravery, which is certainly fun for an air-type.  If they seem hyper-active it’s important to evaluate whether you have the same fiery energy or are a more passive water-earth type who wishes you had an easy-going child.  Aries can be high maintenance because they want to be busy every minute.  They also require constant watching when tiny.  I remember well an incident with our little Aries girl of two years when we first moved to the Sierras.  She liked to be naked and free and loved to roam with our dog, Cecilia, out back in the woods.  However, one day a neighbor lady brought her to me saying she’d found her wandering with the dog, completely naked, down her long dirt road.  She also warned me that there were rattle snakes about that time of year.  Yipes!  After that scare I kept my Pisces self in tow and never let her out of my sight!  Though it was important as she developed to give her enough freedom and autonomy to keep her spirit alive and growing.  She left home at 18 years to trek the globe and came back a young woman full of confidence and strength.  Of course we worried about her, but have never regretted giving her a good send-off and trusting the angels to protect her enroute.

Picture
One last anecdote to illustrate the Aries need for challenging journeys of self-discovery involves my husband’s son from his first marriage.  He, too, left the safety of our nest in his early 20s and journeyed on a small sailboat with a friend from San Francisco to the Hawaiian Islands.  They actually made it!  While there he had plenty of other adventures and mishaps including losing everything on a small skiff that capsized one night and then, while sleeping on the beach, losing his glasses which fell off the driftwood into the campfire.  With no money, no clothes, nor glasses what was he to do?  Why join the Hari Krishnas for a spell, and dance and whirl away his nights on sugar and spiritual highs!

So are you ready for a spirited ride with an Aries?  Go for it!

Neptune Into Pisces: Enchantment Or Sorcery?

1/27/2012

Picture
How will we discern the difference between the realm of true enchantment, the kind of magical experience that uplifts and inspires the soul, and the realm of sorcery, which can equally enchant us through the dark arts of seductive glamour and beguiling deception?
Picture
Neptune is entering its own sign, Pisces, on February 3rd, 2012, and we have until January 26, 2026 to navigate our way through these waters that are vast, deep, and mysterious.  We also have the potential of being swept away into realms beyond anything we can imagine or understand.  It will take some earthy strength to keep our bearings and stay strong within our own solid convictions.  We’ll need both Virgo discrimination and Capricorn determination to stay balanced and focused in the years ahead for Neptune will now be in its own domain.  The power of the oceanic is a force to be reckoned with as we have already witnessed via tidal waves, tsunamis, and raging storms of hurricane proportion, some of which aroused us as Chiron also entered Pisces last year when Japan was hurled into cataclysms almost beyond belief.
Picture
Each planet is said to have ‘rulership’ over many particulars.  A good way to understand this is simply to realize that astrology is a symbolic language, and each planet can represent numerous themes.  Let’s look at a few of the arenas that Neptune in Pisces symbolizes to give you a sense of what will become major areas of concern over the next 14 years and beyond, because once a planet leaves a sign these arenas continue to be forever changed:

WATER
THE OCEANS
HYDROELECTRIC POWER
OIL AND ALL PETROLEUM PRODUCTS
CHEMISTRY/PHARMACEUTICALS/ILLEGAL DRUGS
ADDICTIONS
THE ART WORLD INCLUDING FILMMAKING
FANTASY
MOB PSYCHOLOGY
SORCERY
FRAUD/DECEIT/CON MEN
ESPIONAGE
DIFFICULT TO DIAGNOSE DISEASES
IMMUNITY
GLANDULAR DISEASES
HOSPITALS
INSANITY
MENTAL HOSPITALS
PRISONS

INTUITION
THE ASTRAL REALM
EXPANSION OF CONSCIOUSNESS
FUSION
ECSTACY
ETHERS
DREAMS
VISIONS
ANGELS
ENCHANTMENTS
BLISS

You begin to see the possibilities here.  There will be plenty of endless areas to explore and learn about.

Let’s just start with one topic:  Water

This is a watery planet we all live on.  Water will become a major theme in the years ahead; clean, pure water.  Who will get this water?  Who won’t?  There are 7 billion people now on this planet along with all the flora and fauna that need water as well.  How many will have enough?  How many will be deluged?  It’s doubtful that we’re going to get much of a balance any time soon because we are already too far out of balance.  The question then becomes an issue of water rights.  Who will own the water rights; the public or the private sector?  Grave issues to be sure.

Picture
California is one of those states of the Union formed in 1850 when last Neptune was in Pisces. Remember the Gold Rush and the Neptunian fantasies that were unleashed during that time?  How many got swept away by that ‘Rush’?  Just like a drug, huh?  In fact, most of the major cities in California were incorporated with Neptune in Pisces.  I look forward to writing more about those phenomena in future articles.

Already, there is a power grab to privatize public water in this State.  In the July 26th, 2011 issue of The New York Times an article entitled ‘Storing Water for a Dry Day Leads to Suits’.

Picture
Just one example of these water oligarchs is an exceedingly wealthy couple, the Stewart Resnicks, of Figi Water and other so-called health products under an umbrella Corporation, Roll International, that also produces pesticides.  Through some skillful political negotiations they now own majority stock in what they named the Kern County Water Bank, an under-ground storage facility originally set up and paid for by California tax payers to the tune of nearly a hundred million dollars, and larger than 1 million acre-feet, the size of the state of Rhode Island.  The Resnicks may, in time, sell these water reserves to the highest bidder in the ‘free market’.

There’s more on these subjects in California.  Much, much more.  What about your State?  Will your public interests and rights to clean, pure water be safe?   What about you folk in other nations?  Have you looked into the water situation where you live?  Will your children and their children have enough safe, clean water?  Now is the time to become proactive and work hard.  My neighbor and friend, Steve Baker, is doing just that.  He’s in India right now working with a coalition of people to study water and how to preserve, sustain, and keep it healthy for all.

The health of our oceans will undoubtedly become both a topic of concern and a quandary to solve.  Pollution is upon us all with no end in sight.  Toxicity of all sorts and kinds drains into our oceans every single day.  Who really cares enough to do major problem solving?  This will require massive cooperation amongst all the major developed countries to solve, and soon.  I’d start researching what’s going on in the ocean nearest you.  How safe and clean is the water there?  Who is doing anything about it?

Picture
Pisces understands grief. How many of you with Sun, Moon, Ascendant, 12th house planets know what I’m talking about?    It is the last sign in the zodiac and bears within it much sorrow for all the woes that have accumulated prior to reaching this ‘end of the line place’.  Of course we want this world to be a blissful place.  We want to only experience ecstasy and nirvana as we universalize back into oneness.  Usually, however, we experience something less complete.  We experience what is left undone, unfinished, not completely perfected.  Pisces must bear much.  It’s no accident that this sign along with the 12th house rules hospitals and prisons in addition to ashrams and monasteries.  Hospitals take us to where there is trauma and disease, where individuals can no longer help themselves to heal; prisons do so for different reasons, in a different manner.  Both are end of the line places often.  Healing and rehabilitation doesn’t come easily in either place, though we hear reports of miraculous recovery in both.  Ashrams and monasteries are traditionally places of retreat and withdrawal from the world.  How many of the 7 billion now populating the planet can actually go to one of these places?  How many want to?  How many genuinely seek the life of a renunciate?  The deeply spiritual life demands releasing worldly desires usually.  It’s not an easy path for most.  Pisces and Neptune are the least materialistic of all the planets and signs, period.

End of the line will be a theme for awhile.  Neptune rules dissolution.  It is the great solvent of life, reducing to nothing that which once was strong and seemingly long-lasting.  The Aztecs, Mayans, and Incan Empires were decimated in the 1530s by the invading Spaniards as Neptune was ending its journey through Pisces.  During that same time period Henry the VIII broke from the stronghold of the Catholic Church in England and established his own Church of England.  He also destroyed the positive Guilds which had supported right livelihood in the common people’s lives.  Things irrevocably do change!

When Neptune last journeyed through Pisces from 1847 to 1863 much of a way of life on the North American continent was also dissolved as the Civil War commenced and began to end Plantation life in the South, but also the Gold Rush began to further erode the natural world of the American Indian with a mad new white man’s dream.  In some strange sense it was the beginning of the long struggle for African-American freedoms, but simultaneously the demise of the way of life of freedom for the original peoples of a vast, untamed continent.

Change.  Do things get better, or do they get worse?  It all depends on whose point of view is being expressed.  The planets don’t really seem to determine that, do they?  They rotate around the Sun, just like we on Earth do.  Change is inevitable and new dreams arise out of old fading ones.

The realm of the supernatural is Neptune’s realm, but doubly so when coupled with Pluto.  For a few more years ahead these two will link incredibly well together.  Pluto has a deep affinity for power, while Neptune loves a good dream, a wonderful vision.  Arm in arm they will dance together either towards greater empowerment for all sentient beings, great and small, or towards a power gained over the masses through modern-day methods of sorcery.  Casting spells through mind control, sensory control, emotional control; these methods have been wielded for centuries and are now both science and art when used by those who share not a vision of oneness or wholeness.

Picture
So let’s go back to our original theme here:  enchantment or sorcery?  What magical new dream would you like to experience in your lifetime?  What vision do you have of your own future?  Neptune in Pisces will certainly encourage you to dream and envision something enchanting and wonderful.  If the old dissolves away, what may yet emerge?  We each will have an opportunity to ponder and act on these themes in the many years ahead.

For all of us as a collective, Neptune in Pisces will create shifts in several important areas:

The environment and our physical health:  The issue of water, its purity and distribution certainly will be pertinent. Water ways and water rights will all be changing as further global warming melts the ice caps and creates new vast territories open for exploitation. The issue of our immunity as a species will also be a major theme as the potential spread of viral diseases increases as well as potential discoveries and cures hopefully.  Pisces rules the immune system and our planet’s immune system, the ozone layer, is of grave concern.  Neptune rules all fossil fuels and their misuse as well as their depletion will be topics of concern.

Socio-political fields will be changing and the ever present danger is a one world government which dominates the masses rather than embracing the uniqueness of all within the whole.  Past Neptune in Pisces conquests included Spain’s domination of Central and South America and its subsequent genocides and Inquisitions, the flight of thousands to East Coast colonies to escape persecutions in Europe and England during the 1690s, and of course the movements already mentioned during the 1850s into early 1860s.

Spiritual-Religious movements are quite marked during Neptune’s passage through Pisces.  Martin Luther’s Reformation during the 1530s forever changed the domination of the Catholic Church up to that point in time.  Further back in the 1190s were the Knights Templar and their Crusades into the Holy Land, and even further back than that was the Roman Empires adoption of Christianity in the 370s.  The last time we had Neptune in Pisces there was a flourishing of small religious sects, some of which have grown to have broad influence in today’s world such as the Mormon Church movement out of which we now have a presidential candidate, Mitt Romney.

We can learn much from studying past cycles with Neptune in Pisces, but remember that each cycle is unique in that other planets were in different signs and combinations with the Neptune factor.  Also, we much take into consideration evolution.  These cycles don’t simply repeat themselves endlessly.  They seem to spiral as they revolve.  Do they also spiral back down?  Possibly.  We know that in this vast universe stars explode and implode.  Black holes exist.  Anti-matter exists. Dark matter exits. These are all part of the great mysteries we can barely fathom in their implications.

Picture
Still, my personal dream is for a world where everyone can flourish, including all the creatures of the air, water, and land, and the natural habitats that they are a part of.  My dream is to live in a clean and healthy environment with others who respect their sense of place and all who live there with them.  My dream is to have heaven on earth; not to be rescued nor to escape, but rather to leave this place better than when I entered it. My dream is to have a good and peaceful world for my grandchildren, and their children to live in. My dream is for the freedom to worship as one so desires without imposing those beliefs on others.  My dream is for freedom of speech and the right to assemble peacefully without fear of persecution.  I have other dreams too, but that’s a start.

WHAT ARE YOUR DREAMS????  With Neptune in Pisces make sure you don’t neglect those true enchanting dreams!  Why?  Well, we know if we don’t dream during the night, while asleep, we may go crazy.  Dreaming awake may just keep us sane!

WINTER SOLSTICE 2011

12/19/2011

Winter Solstice 2011
Picture
For thousands of years the Solstice turning points of every year have been honored and celebrated on this planet.  We know this because concrete evidence still exists in ancient stone circles, mounds, and sacred sites such as Newgrange in Ireland that people honored the relationship between our earth, the sun, and the moon at key phases during the year.
Picture
Now in our modern world of the 21st Century we come to yet another turn of the wheel and many of us will be celebrating the return of the light that is the Winter Solstice.  I will be gathering with a group of women on a beautiful horse ranch here in the Sierras.  We will share food, music with drums, rattles, and bells, and do ritual together releasing the old and bringing in our intentions for the new, yet to unfold.  What will you be doing where you are?  Those of you south of the equator will be celebrating the peak strength of the sun and the longest day of the year as you prepare for its slow descent.  Let’s hope that all around the globe people of all persuasions are gathering together to make sacred and celebrate together this special time.

In the United States the Solstice occurs on December 22nd at 12:30 AM EST.  The Sun’s entry into Capricorn comes in the deep darkness of night with the Moon waning in Scorpio.  There certainly seems to be ‘a chill in the collective air’ regarding a lack of warmth and light, thus the trine from Sun to Jupiter holds rays of hope that abundance is a strong potential if we will only perceive it anew and shift our consciousness away from what we don’t have to what we do.

Picture
This is a fascinating chart in that you can visibly see an enormous bowl pattern bordered by an opposition from Saturn in the 1st house to Jupiter in the 7th. Every planet within this bowl links through both easy and challenging aspects to other planets.  Only Mars sits alone in the 12th without aspect save a strong square to the Nodes.  Perhaps it’s a good thing to shelve our aggressiveness for awhile and look more consciously at ways to make peace.  The bowl patternis symbolic of holding something which can be given to others, and this chart seems to indicate that deep within each of us as souls there is a profound longing to belong, to be held and nurtured by ancient themes that run solid in our blood, to deeper truths that speak of oneness with the earth and thus the cosmos.  If we can hold that place sacred within our core selves, then we can radiate that out into the world and nurture others.  It can be a chain reaction of giving.  Yes it can.

This is a Libra rising chart for Americans.  Somewhere else on the globe a different sign will be rising as the Sun enters Capricorn.  For this country, however, Venus in Aquarius sets the pace as ruler of the chart.  She represents women and women’s issues, and all social factors relating to unions of partnership as well as children.  She represents the arts with its entire plethora of artists, musicians, dancers, and entertainers and even sports where arenas for entertainment occur.  She also presides over peace negotiations and diplomatic resolutions.  Venus is very strong in this chart holding the apex of a T-square with Saturn and Jupiter, as well as sextiling the Moon and Uranus who are in trine with each other.  She’s a wowie!  She basically says we can pull together, we can organize; we can hold the tensions of opposition if we are willing to be tolerant and open-minded enough to realize that each individual is important within the embrace of the whole.  We are each different but equal. That’s Venus in Aquarius.  So American women are increasingly getting stronger in their voices and activism which is probably a good thing for this country, but this Venus embraces everyone and says let’s be creative, have fun, and stimulate each other for better things than beating up on each other.  Let’s take advantage of Mars in the collective closet.  Let’s make love, not war!!

This chart is a tightly woven net-work of grace and grit all held together by the two extremes, Saturn and Jupiter.  Good thing theSun sextiles Saturn and trines Jupiter.  Sun in Capricorn is willing to work for a goal, an aspiration.  Mercury in Sagittarius conjoining the North Node, rising ahead of the Sun, and finally direct after back-tracking retrograde this past month says “Stay focused on your goals, your aspirations, and don’t look back.  Keep going forward.”

The trines from Uranus in Aries to the Moon and Mercury indicate the rising tide of revolutionary spirit that Sun/Pluto squaring Uranus must harness for positive change rather than regressive control.  We each have an opportunity to imprint this energy to release the past, which keeps us chained to oppressive patterns, and harness the energy for positive growth into a future where we all contribute productively to the whole and benefit from that whole. Pluto gives power to regeneration if we use it for that ends.

Finally, this chart shows Neptune and Chiron still connected as a dream of potential healing linked with Jupiter, the Sun, and Saturn, yet squared by the Moon in Scorpio.  Can a dream of unity inspire us to keep going and work for a better world, or will our fears of defeat and oppression hold us back?  The choice is ours.

This Winter Solstice gives us an amazing pattern to work with.  Its basic statement is about integrating energies that can further transformation (Sun conjoining Pluto).  The message of Capricorn is always about holding light during the darkest of times.  So I’m encouraging all of you to gather together and bring in the light!

Get Ready For 235 Days Of Mars in Virgo—-Woo-Hoo! by Genevieve Vierling

12/11/2011

While a lot of attention is being focused on the ‘end of the Mayan Calendar’ and it’s unknown aftermath, as well as the 11.11.11 date, are we also ready for another Mars tour, and slow detour through a sign not exactly known for its Mars friendliness?  Let’s hope so, because here we go, ready or not!

On 11.11.11 Mars enters Virgo for 235 days.  Yes, that’s 7.8 months.  During that long spell, Mars will slow and retrograde on January 24 th, 2012 at 23 degrees of Virgo and move backwards for 82 days until it slowly turns direct on April 14th at 3 degrees.  It will finally leave Virgo by July 3, 2012, just in time for America’s Birthday celebration. Those are the hard facts.

Perhaps it’s now a good idea to take a look at your own birth chart and figure out just where that Mars energy is going to be, if not simply sit (!) for a spell, in the months to come.  Pay careful attention to that arena because you will definitely get catalyzed there with all sorts of Virgoan themes.

What are some key Virgo themes to be aware of?  Ram Dass said it best, “BE HERE NOW”.  Virgo isn’t exactly a sign that embraces fantasy and escape from reality.  Virgo prefers to tackle problems that need to be addressed right now.  That’s why Virgos make such great practitioners of all kinds.  They like to solve problems and even get their hands greasy like good mechanics do, or bloody, like good surgeons do.  Get in there and get the job done, and don’t muck around thinking about what you’d rather be doing!

Another great Virgo asset needs to come to the fore while going through this Mars tour of duty:  HUMOR.  Virgo is unsurpassed for its ability to mimic and literally poke fun at the idiosyncrasies and short comings  of us humans. Lots of Virgos are great comedians. One wonders whether the up coming election campaigns in the the United Stages won't be a huge collective comedy of errors since much of the brou-ha-ha will be going on during this Mars rite of passage. Another theme I can see in Virgo is the BABY STEPS one.  Virgo is not the place to long-distance run, or even short-distance sprint.  Mars will literally have to play that game that many of us are familiar with from our child-hood; remember ‘Simon Says’ or ‘Mother May I?’.   Remember that you had to follow the rules and got sent back to the beginning line if you didn’t?  Remember that feeling of itching to go, and you couldn’t just run non-stop to the goal?  Oh!  Such frustration!  Virgo will demand that Mars move carefully, and with great discrimination.  One false move and you’re out.  Ouch.

Once Mars moves into that retrograde phase between January 24th and April 14th (3 months), things will really slow down and a great deal of analysis will take place as false starts and false steps are sorted through.  Pay careful attention to anything in your chart from 23 degrees back to 3 degrees of any of the Mutable Signs (Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces, and Gemini).  This will be a time to carefully sort out what needs to be done to correct something in all four arenas, and once Mars turns direct, to carefully, and oh, so slowly, move forward with your carefully thought-out plans.  Note I’m emphasizing the word CAREFULLY.  Not exactly one of Mars favorite styles!

The final theme I want to mention (and there are obviously myriad themes) for Virgo is IMPECCABLE.  A true Virgo style is just that, impeccable.  Every little detail has been attended to.  With this goes the higher octave of INTEGRITY.  So the question to ask will be, “Am I acting impeccably in this situation?  Am I acting with the highest level of integrity I can muster?”

Mars, as an archetype, is our potency.  On this planet it represents our will to survive by getting us in touch with what we want, and what we have to do to get what we want.  How do you express your own potency?  Do you feel potent?  Or do you feel impotent?  Impotency creates victimization and pushes to the depths unconscious rage.  When such rage is blocked or suppressed, the Mars energy can be directed against oneself, or against the world outside oneself.  This type of blocked Mars energy in Virgo can result in sado-masochistic practices.  Jeff Green, the expert on Pluto and sexuality, has a lot to say about this theme in his books.

If we take that theme to the collective issues we are now facing on this planet regarding the right use, or the misuse of Mars energy, we can probably forecast that Mars in Virgo will be creating a collective crisis of enormous impact.  There will need to be in this equation the ability to collectively examine where acts of aggression are taking us.  Will there be the collective ability to critique ourselves with some humility?  Will there be the ability to step-by-step figure out how to take a natural urge in all of us and turn our Mars energy away from the ‘god of war’ back to it’s original blueprint as ‘the god of agriculture’?
We all know in our hearts that this is what has to happen, or we are all doomed to a scenario eventually straight out of ‘Mad Max Beyondthe Thunderdome.’.  I’m serious folks.  We really don’t have time to muck around with this primal energy that keeps us in our limbic brains.  Time is running out.

So there’s going to be a lot of necessary work ahead.  Mars in Virgo will help all of us as a collective provided that the ‘sadists’ among us are exposed and restrained, and some type of mass healing of the Pisces shadow of the last 2600 years of  predator (sadist)/victim (masochist) takes place.

There are many guides now available to those who want to awaken.  You won’t find these guides on TV, in politics, or in your local Chamber of Commerce.  They are not doing the ‘business as usual’ routine.  Virgo guides are going to be unobtrusive and humble people.  They’re not going to be leading out of a need for ego self-aggrandizement.  Just ask, and they will appear.  It’s that simple.  The veils are thinning between thought and synchronistic manifestation.

It’s important to note that Mars in Virgo, during this lengthy time, will catalyze the 1960s generation, especially as Uranus is now forming it’s waxing square to Pluto.  The revolutionary changes bolstered in 1966 when Uranus conjoined Pluto in Virgoimprinted all the souls born then.  This generation is now in their 40s, and moving into their power positions in society.  May enough of them have the courage to act impeccably and with added passion as the energies of 2012 gain momentum.

Finally, think about this:  During the next 235 days millions of babies will be born with Mars in Virgo.  Millions of them.  That’s a wowie to think about.  They will be turning 21 years in 2032.  May they all be blessed with the will to survive and work hard for a new world that is yet to be revealed, for they may very well be ‘the meek who inherit the Earth.’    Let this be a bountiful, heavenly Earth!
